Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders cause pain and tenderness in a person’s jawbone, as well as within the muscles that are used to control jaw movement. These disorders can be the result of genetics, arthritis, injury and excessive clenching and grinding of one’s teeth. Most cases of TMJ disorders are temporary, and the problem can usually be solved with non-surgical treatment.
At 32nd Street Dental, we will examine your jaw for symptoms of TMJ by listening to and feeling the jawbone as it is moved; measuring the range of motion of the jaw and asking you to identify any areas of discomfort on or around your jaw.
Sometimes, the pain associated with a TMJ disorder will disappear on its own. More severe cases may require some medical intervention in order to alleviate discomfort. If our experts determine that you are suffering from a TMJ disorder, you may be prescribed one or more of the following:
- Pain Medication
- Muscle Relaxants
- Physical Therapy
- Mouth Guards
